17 Days of Civics
The justice and legal system are strange beasts. We sit here in what we call a "free" country, with our kids fighting for our "freedoms," and the system that is supposed to ensure such "freedom" is severely fractured. I do not think the founding fathers had this mess in mind when drafting so eloquently the Declaration of Independence.
As written in the Declaration, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
Let us break this complicated statement down real quick.
- all men are created equal- We all know this country has had issues with this part of the constitution, but after a couple of hundred years maybe we are closer to getting it right than ever before, unless of course you are a medical cannabis patient provider. Then you are not equal in a court of law by any means. Ask Charlie Lynch. Even sex traffickers get to try to explain their cases in full.
- they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness- Unless of course in is cannabis therapy that makes you capable of achieving said "happiness" wherein we will lock your ass up for a very long time. Unalienable rights? Non-negotiable rights? Why do I feel like this passage has been abused if not forgotten? Liberty is a concept we all know is slipping quietly into the night.
- That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed- Unless the governed are in the State of California, wherein it does not really matter what the governed think, or vote for, or even the medical and scientific professionals amongst the governed think. They are wrong. Forget that up to 80% of America believes that cannabis should be rescheduled. Forget the overwhelming documentation of it efficacy to treat health conditions, thus creating a happier society. What are "Just Powers"? What is just about any of this anymore?

What is most likely to effect our safety and happiness? Maybe a government that respected the sovereignty of the States, listened to science and research to make informed decisions instead of doing whatever the people who finance their campaigns tell them to do, or quite possibly a governing body that was just simply free of corruption and greed. We definitely need to make it less profitable to be a public servant. Either way, we must abolish the current failed practices and policies before our entire society collapses.
I will leave you with this famous quote from Thomas Jefferson to ponder. Is this what we see in our society, in our America, in our World this day?
"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their money, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them (around the banks), will deprive the people of their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."
